Hi everyone, I'm anita. I have no experience painting but some years ago my cousin gifted me a canvas and as a perfectionist I was saving it until I had the perfect idea so I wouldn't waste it. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I've been trying to free myself from these thoughts and so I've decided to just paint it however I felt like. 🙃 I also used this canvas to try materials such as texture paste and added sand mixed with acrylic paint. I'm faced with a problem now. 🥸 The colors aren't really doing it for me. But I don't know how to fix it. Every advice is very welcome 🙏🏼 (also just wanted to say I'm so happy this space exists because I've been feeling lonely in my art journey all these years) thank you ✨

Hi, thank you very much 🙏🏼 I wanted this painting to be an experiment with different materials 😅 Do you think shading will do it or should I change the color of the vase? also, what color should I paint the flowers? or leave them like that?

Hey 🙌🏼 my idea was to make a vase with flowers. I wanted to create a feeling like the flowers were standing off the painting so I tried to do that using texture paste. And I also wanted to try use sand to give a rough feeling. but since I have no experience it became a bit messy I think and I just started going with the flow. Now I feel like I need someone else to look at it and tell me how they feel and what should I add or change so it can feel like a more professional painting (like I know what I'm doing 🤣)

My advice is to take it slow. Change one thing at a time and give yourself the opportunity to look at it with a fresh eye each time and see how you feel about the change.

Some things to think about: (1) the color scheme. The only color in the painting is various shades of orange, but it doesn't exactly come across as monochromatic, probably because of the large mass of white. Do you want to have a monochromatic color scheme, or would you like something else? It would be good to decide that first, before you add any more paint.

If you want it monochromatic, I would suggest that you tint the flowers a very light orange, with shading in a slightly darker shade of orange. That would pull the elements of the painting together.

If you want to add other colors, you need to decide on the color scheme. Two simple schemes I would recommend are analogous or complementary. If you need more advice about implementing one of those, feel free to ask.

So far, you're doing very well. I like the 3D effect with the flowers!

Those are great advices. Thank you 🙏🏼 Your text is what I needed. I don't understand anything about color scheme, I only rule myself for looking at it and seeing how I feel 😅 do you know any place I could study about it online or even any books? I didn't want it to look so orange to be honest. I started adding to the background because I felt like it was too orange. and I was thinking about adding some more browns and maybe beige. so it would go from beige to brown passing through orange. I think that's the colors I was initially wanting to go for.

That's still a more or less monochromatic color scheme. Brown is orange with some black added. Beige is brown with some white added, so all of those are based on orange, as opposed to other colors like blue or green.

There's nothing wrong with that if it's what you want. But I still think the large patch of white unbalances the painting. There's nothing wrong with white, as such, but it would look more natural if you used slightly darker shadows to fall where the flowers would naturally shade the ones behind.

I'm sure there are dozens of videos on YouTube dealing with color schemes. I'll see if I can find a basic one and post the link for you.

Ok, here's a link to a pretty basic version of color theory. I think it could be of help to you now and also later when you get a little more experienced.

Please post your painting again when you decide what to do with it. It's so much fun to watch paintings evolve! 😄🍁🍂🎃 (This is a good time of the year for orange!)
