I used an electric wood burner that I got from Hobby Lobby. It is like a soldering iron, but it has a few different attachments that are different shapes. That was actually my first attempt using it. I have done a few more portraits since then.

yeah, I have that one too. But, I also have the Razortip that is a bit more advanced. I've never attempted a portrait but it's on my bucket list. if you are into woodworking also, we have about 3 forums that are very informative in the DIY projects.
