Hey guys!
I'm new here, just discovered this website Quick question for y'all:
I want to paint a surfboard for décor for my parents' house. Where do you buy a surfboard specifically to paint on (it won't be used at all, so it doesn't have to be an actual surfboard I guess). Should it be wooden? I see decorative surfboards used as signs for shops sometimes, what material is used?

its always quite expensive sicne they are so huge you have to get them to your workstation etc - so buying will always be expensive due to
transportation. there is epoxy ( i dont really know what kind of material it is but appereantly its a thing with surfers ) which is more dense i.e. heavy
and then there is polyester coating.

you can buy a blank and shape it yourself. i think this is the cheapest method apart from just taking a wooden panel and create a flat oval.

you would need to coat the blank after shaping but since you dont actually intend to use it it would not need to be water proof so any acrylic
painting surface medium would do.

i know because i was thinking about selling custom srufboards since i got some friends who are really into surfing and people would buy them.
i got commission work to work on two boards already so was thinking about just designing them - i scratched the idea
tho since i dont know jack about surfing so its kind of hard to shape them the right way ^^

What to paint a decorative surfboard with?

In the same vein of the messages above, I already have a surfboard (living in San Diego, people sometimes just get rid of their old boards that are in bad condition) and I want to paint it for decoration, not for surfing. What paint would be best to use on a purely decorative surfboard?

Take a look at Drew Brophy's work. He uses water based paint pens to paint on surf boards. I would imagine you would have to sand the board down to get under the clear coat then apply a clear once you are finished with the art. I have used paint pens and they work great but they take abit of practice to figure out how they blend together.

i just used acrylics. its cheap and will work just fine. you have to remove wax leftover tho. the first board i was illustrating i was using posca pens
but they are also acrylic based afaik. next board i went with brush and acrylics directly on board. a painting surface medium is helpful if board
has brandings printed on it.

the first one was done wiht posca pens - the second acrilyc brush work. both kept their paint while in action ( the first board now is broken
into 2 halfes resting in peace on a wall hehe ) so just for decoration itll be super safe.
