I have a project of designing a space for artists to use and work in. As part of my research I would like to know the ideal environment artists tend to work in. An example would be lots of sun light. If you own a studio where you work on paintings, please explain why you work there and why it works for you to paint there. Also what are things you don't want as part of a ideal environment?
This is all part of a school assignment and any input would be much appreciated, thanks!

I think you hit on the biggest item for a good work environment....LIGHT! Natural light. I also like good ventilation. Of course a comfortable temperature would go without saying.

I like have table areas on either side of my easel. One side I keep the paint on the other side brushes and clean up stuff like paper towels and mineral spirits.

I will be deleting the other two threads that are duplicates. It only complicates things when there are duplicates threads on the forum.

Great thanks! What other things do you find important? For example the scale of the room. Think of the 5 senses. What truly makes a space for a painter evocative and special for them, what makes it their own sanctuary?

One thing that is important is to have it peaceful. I don't like listening to children or city noise. I usually will play some soft music.

Can't think of much else, but I'm still new at this. Dick is building himself a new studio. I bet he has some ideas.

Would you mind directing Dick to this thread? Perhaps he may have valuable information i could use. I would love to hear what ideas he has about his studio and why he may be building it a certain way.

You might want to specify the type painting being done... Not every one just does oils/watercolors on small panels.

The answer to your question is as diverse as those who will answer it. Some like quiet, others loud music. Some need all the space in the world and others are most comfortable with a small corner or couch. Some need mind altering chemicals while others would consider that condition detrimental to their art.

Me, I need time and good lighting. Oh, ..and coffee,....always coffee!

Yooouuu got it! Mine's a shop, not a studio. Messy & full of stuff! And a sterio & ez chair.

One thing that would be of great benefit in a studio is a sink. I'm forever washing my hands when I paint.

I've asked the question about lighting myself but didn't get any response. I painted my room white for a start, don't know if it's right or wrong. I'm thinking of getting some track lighting to assure good lighting on the work. I'm going to try warm white LED bulbs. I'll have some natural light from a NW facing window, probably not ideal but it's natural.

Sorry, I have more questions than answers. I'll learn as I go.

I have good lighting in my work area but I also use a couple of floor lamps because I can move them around where I need them as I'm painting.

I've never seen reason to get carried away with such. If the floros put out enuff light, go for it. You can use warm and cool tubes, plus "corrected" versions. Good idea to avoid shadows though.

Certainly, a good supply of light is important. I like to paint late at night when everything is much quieter. And don't discount painting on location.
