So I just finished another picture. This is my oldest daughter. Still not completely satisfied with my work, but I see some improvement. Not sure if I would consider this one a wall-hanger or not. Next I will do a portrait of my youngest daugther.

VERY nice job! Your daughters will be proud. I have done several of my son - for me it's harder to draw his face because I know his characteristics and what I want to show through in my pictures and that's hard to do.

I think you did an amazing job!

Thanks for the compliments. It is true that I feel it is harder to draw someone you are close with for all the reasons you explained.

I still feel like I'm honing my craft. Still getting a feel for the different leads and how to use them. I'm not where I want to be yet, but will have to continue to work at it.

We are out own worst critic.

I think a lot of us feel like we are still honing our craft. Its the constant pursuit of that
(ever elusive) perfection. I do agree with your own worst critic statement. I am terribly hard on myself and my works. I think that if I was ever happy with my work that there would be a problem because it's that constant self criticism that keeps me going and improving.

Great portraits, Big! You certainly have comand of charcoal. Who can ever be satisfied with their own work when there is always so much more to learn and do. Its great to be in a field of endeavor that has no limits.
