Hi there! I have to say first hand that I'm only a layman. I've just come across a painting by Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Sappho and Alcaeus. Wow! It stroke me with the details. The standing girl, the characters' skin & clothes, the lighting, the tree trunks, the marble... all brought a realistic feeling that made me keep asking whether this can be a photograph or not :surprise: Then I made some quick searching & found that most of his arts possess the same quality. Further, I found some other artists who give me the confusion between a painting & real world: Henri Biva, William Bliss Baker, Ilya Repin to name a few, although their pieces don't have the same high consistency as Tadema's works.
Whew, quite some rant :vs_closedeyes:The question is, could you pls give me the precise name for those artists' style? In other words, if I want to search for more painters with that striking art of confusing people between what's real & what's painted, who would you like to recommend? Tks in advance.

You mean art movement? Realism...for Henri Biva,William Bliss Baker,Ilya Repin and Romanticism for Lawrence Alma Tadema

No, not really the art movements. Let me try putting it another way. When you see "Rest" by Repin, "The roses of Heliogabalus" by Tadema, "From waters egde" by Biva & "Fallen monarchs" by Baker, what things do you find in common between them? Of course individuals' views differ, but what I find is the incredible resemblance of real life in those pictures. At least, when I open the images in full screen I still can't believe they're just painted, not photographed. The details those artists put on them are amazing. On the other hand, for a lots of other Realists & Romanticists I can tell right away that those pieces are painted. Some of them even use styles that I can remotely think of Picasso. So certainly art movement has nothing to do with this characteristic I'm refering to.
Hope that can make it a bit clearer to you So, if I'm looking for guys with works that "looks" like Biva or Tadema, what are your suggestions?

Try Photorealism.. some of it will blow your mind away

Thank you all, Asancta & Bush. While browsing through some of the best photorealism artists at http://www.creativebloq.com/illustration/examples-photorealism-10135012, I find myself attracted the most to Rob Hefferan & especially Jeremy Geddes. Take Rob's work there for example, aside from the astonishing lighting & creases, his piece of art make me wonder what the bride is looking at... Is she waiting for someone?... Jeremy's "A perfect vacumm" leads me to other questions. How does gravity work there? Where is the vacumm? Off to the right? Is she sucked from outside through the window? If so, how comes the pillow stays there while the heavy things like people & those books are affected? My brain races with dozens of questions. The others' works, while amazing in details, don't spark a train of art thoughts as these two. I mean, if I want a super real depiction of my kitchen - or any place in that matter, then I can pick a camera & achieve the same quality as those from Ralph Goings' or Roberto Bernadi's. Their pictures just don't "spark the fire".
Think back to Tadema's case, who I got the first & most profound impression, maybe it's the 'romance' in his works that gets me. Reliving the scenes in ancient Greece & Egypt with such details is one of the things that have the most stimulating effect on your mind's imagination.
So, is my art taste a mix between photorealism & romanticism? Is there a specific word for it?
