Hello,

I'm a lover of modern art, but an uncle of me offered me an old big painting. I like it but it has all 'cracks' on the canvas? Is that normal with old paintings? I guess it is maybe in oil pai ting who has had bad conditions in the past? Parshed? Thanks a lot!

The cracks seem random and irregular, fake cracking tends to be regular and covering the whole painting.
A photo taken across the surface with a light source low to the surface will show if there is raised brush strokes and if the cracks have depth to them, some signs it could be genuine oil painting.
Some other things to check.
Look at the back, is it on a canvas stretched over a wooden frame?
Is the wooden frame light or darkened with age?
Is the back of the canvas white/ cream or is it brownish with staining or other marks?
Is there a label hidden on the back somewhere with information on it?
