Hi, I’m Lisa and I live in Foster City, CA. I have always been interested in oil painting and decided to try it on my own. It was OK, but then after a 10-year break I decided to take a class and it was eye opening. I’ve been returning to the class to use it as studio time and receive additional instruction. I want to paint in the style of an impressionist and am trying to find my way. I joined this forum to learn from others and gain support. I've created a couple of albums if you want to check them out.

Hi Lisa,

Welcome, your parrots are great. I've just come back to painting after a nearly a 20 year break. Also joined an art group, loving having a designated time to paint and someone to ask questions!! I love impressionism but realism is calling me too strongly at the moment :)

I think your paintings are pretty nice for getting back in the groove of things. If you want to go impressionist, try loosening up a little. Don't be afraid to blur the lines. Also, pick subject matter that is in motion. Impressionists aimed to study the effects of light on moving objects. Blowing fields of wheat, waves on the ocean, birds in flight, this is what the true impressionist looks for, so that he or she may record their impression of the fleeting moment.

Haystacks and lily pads are not in motion.

I see what you mean. Not all of the subject matter of the Impressionists wasin motion per say. You're right. I just wanted to give a little constructive criticism. I guess it doesn't necessarily have to be in motion to be good subject matter for an impressionistic style. However, Monet didn't paint the Water Lilies because of the water lilies, he painted those works to study the effects of light on water, how it moves and changes. Impressionism focuses on how movement is part of the human experience.
