Greetings everyone! It's been a little bit since I joined the community. My daughter and I wrapped up our first art class which was a lot of fun especially together. We did a few paintings, but I really struggled with those. I find drawing to be much easier and did play with colored pencils some which was easier than handling a brush :) The class wrapped up in February and I haven't been super active since, but I thought I'd share what I worked on this past week. I'm not wholly satisfied with it as I'm still working on getting the hang of correct placement and sizing of individual features of the face. I find myself inspired by the beauty and emotion displayed in the face.

This past year has been something of an awakening for me. I never thought I would be able to create like this. It's really been fun though I struggle to break free of old habits and commit time to developing this gift. Anyway, I hope each of you are well.
Love the Aurora Borealis painting, Don!

Portraits are the hardest of all things to draw or paint. I imagine the human brain distinguishes even the slightest differences of expression.

I think you've made a great start on portrait drawing. The skin tones are really excellent. You captured a bit of the expression in the eyes, but not all of it. I think if you do multiple drawings of the same face, it will become more familiar to you each time and you should capture more of that very moving expression each time. It's certainly worth the effort. You made an excellent choice of model.

Like with most things, consistent effort is key to advancing. My advice is to set a time of day and spend at least 5 minutes drawing, even if it's just doodling, as close to every single day that you can. You certainly have a gift, but whether it gets developed or not is entirely up to you.

Good luck! 🙂
