I'm an old inker (and stinker), but I have to admit that I've never tried the pointillist approach. I'm not sure what you depicted, but it looks like a very nicely done chunk of coral to me! The watercolor-washed background is quite cool, too. I've been drawing on watercolor paper lately, maybe I should start out with a wash and then let the ink take its course.
