Noob artist here,

3rd month of taking this seriously!

After creating some god awful pictures I decided to go about things in a different way so I bought a reference guide for anatomy and muscular detail etc with the intention to draw in a comic style, I'm happy with the shapes of my drawings but the muscular detail and ways my characters bodies take form always seem really off and I hate the fact that they never look like a comic and instead look like incredibly amateur drawings that show little sign of improvement

I'd appreciate it if someone could give me some basic tips on where I'm going wrong and what I'm doing right

any and all feedback welcome of course

First I'd like to say that your pictures are really good but yes they are cartoonish and you are seeking reality. I think it's because of the prominence of lines used in your drawing. In more realistic painting the form doesn't show an outline the person is shaded and the outline is not visible.

One really good artist we have here that excels in muscle drawings is @Lashdown91. Check out his albums and you will see what I'm talking about. He's a great guy so don't be afraid to send him a personal message with questions.

We have an amazing number of artist that do realistic drawings. Hope you stick around and get to know them.

I think your drawings are great!

I'm no expert when it comes to comics, but to me, I think their primary objective is to capture movement. Anatomical inaccuracies go relatively unnoticed, I think, as long as proportion is correct (which yours are).

The nude in art is a powerful tool for presenting movement, so it won't hurt to keep studying those superficial muscles.

Updates again


First picture is the same girl I usually draw, the main idea behind a comic I plan to eventually write once I perfect [or will be content with] my drawing style

Second picture is the famous ADAM WARLOCK from Marvel Comics, google him and look through the first picture of images and you should see which picture I used for reference

Third picture is a rework of an older picture I had to see how much I had come along, I have seen improvement but I still feel that its not enough to warrant a before+after style treatment, so maybe in a year or so when I'm significantly better than what I am now ill revisit him again

Okay first of they'er all pretty good. It looks like your trying to get a feel for anatomy and I do understand you've only been taking this seriously for a few few months but this tells me that you've been drawing on and off for a while now. So I'm going to talk to you not as a knob but as a person who has achieved a certain amount of skill level which you you seem to have done. And you did ask for it.
The first problem I see is that you seem to be copying comic books rather than than actual life. This isn't a bad Idea because even Stan Lee and the other artists at DC and Marvel recommend that young artists copy their stuff to see how they do things. I've read their books and studied their styles. Now every good comic book artist I've known and I know allot, they will tell strait to your face though (YOU HAVE TO DO A FIGURE STUDY AND LIFE DRAWING!!!) It's the same problem I had in my youth. That's why I ended up a graphic artist rather than a comic book artist. No discipline!
You see I'm seeing allot of frontal poses here which tells me You got your portrait down and a reasonable amount of frontal anatomy down but but you lack knowledge of how the human body actually moves and looks at different angles and in different situation. This makes your characters look a little stiff and lifeless. I also haven't see how your characters look in an action situation so perspective and concept is another area your going to have to learn. One thing I recommend is going to a park, street corner maybe a mall any where a zoo and just start drawing what you see but I'm guessing your still young so take your time and be patient and study art. Now this is going sound tacky but stay in school and learn discipline. A high school degree looks good on you resume and helps if you what to get grants, scholarships, loans if you what to further your education by going to art schools. But in my opinion art school isn't necessary but it will help in getting access to live models and help polish your work so I'm not against art school ether.

Also not knowing how young you are I'm not going to give a link to this but type "figure study" into google then click on images. This will give you a good start.

I keep meening to practice this style, also manga interests me x you seem to be doing very well at this
