I inherited this ivory carving from my dad and am curious as to how much it's worth. I'm not really into art and it would likely be destroyed if it gets lost among my projects.

If it's real ivory then I think it's illegal to sell ivory inside the US...you have to check it up though.

Did the research its legal to sell because it was made before the ban. If I remember right my dad got it while serving in Vietnam.

The law says non commercial sales of legally acquired ivory are legal.

That looks like celluloid or an artificial ivory. If it is, then it is worth about $5.

You could try to sell it online...dunno give it a try.But again to be on the safe side you should have papers to prove it was bought before 89.And am sure people will ask you for proves that it is real ivory...

Original paperwork BEFORE you try and sell. If you can´t supply this you need to get it appraised for authentication which will cost money. Most people on this forum are not qualified to give you the information you seek. If nothing else, keep it for sentimental value.

I have an original Isle of Lewis chess set in solid ivory... it's totally illegal to sell ivory anywhere in the west now but it's legal to own it

It is illegal to sell if it were created today. Inheriting probably changes things. Pieces done before We passed an anti-ivory law are permitted to be sold.There is always a chance that it is carved Melamine (Plastic). I would suggest exploring the internet for answers. You could also go to an up-scale jewelry store for help (But, if they offer to buy it on the spot, I might hold onto it, and check another source)
