Greetings. My friend has this painting that was passed down from her grandparents who have no question that it's pre-1900. It's oil on board, excellent condition. Any thoughts on who the artist could be based on style and/or signature?

It looks to me like J.A.SxJohn. If he’s artistically making a t as an x, then it could be James Allen St. John:

All museums and art galleries have websites and can be reached via email. Contact them with a photo of the painting, and they will tell you if they know anything.
