I am seeking stories, comments and advice from those who have had their work exhibited in galleries. I am looking to hear the good, the bad, the ugly and everything in between.

The reason I am requesting this information is because I am in the early stages of opening my own gallery and want to hear from those who have first-hand experience of dealing with galleries.

I would also appreciate any comments and advice from those who have not exhibited in a gallery, providing information on what they would like or expect from a gallery for research purposes.

Any advice would be appreciated and you never know; you may have an exhibition in my gallery!

Thank you for reading and look forward to hearing from you!

Welcome to the forum
I never was exhibited but my mom has
She had good and bad experience, the bad one one because of the lady that had the gallery she didn't do a proper job of publicizing the show and didn't take good care of the artists that were there, the lighting was bad which didn't flatter the paintings at all, and the good experiences well everything was nicely done, good publicity very nice lightning and painting placement
She even sold one of her paintings
I don't know if this help or not but welcome once again and good luck with your gallery

Hi

Thank you for welcoming me to the forum and for your comments.

@ Melody - I am sure that you will exhibit your work and someone will definitely buy your pieces. It is worth joining different art forums or if you have your own website where you can showcase your work; that is always a good place to start.

@ Terry - Do not ever think that your work is not good enough to be exhibited! There is going to someone out there who will love what you do, just keep positive.

@ Erilia - Thank you for your story about your mom's exhibiting experience. I am glad to hear that your mom had a positive experience of exhibiting her work as well as selling a piece of her work after her bad experience. :vs_shocked: I will definitely take what you have written on board and try not to make the same mistake!

@ Melody, Terry and Erilia - do you have any websites or links where I can view your work? I would love to see the talent that is out there to get inspirational ideas for the exhibits I would like within my gallery.

Thank you all again and keep loving what you do!

I have a facebook page with my paintings...https://www.facebook.com/PaintingsbyTheresaCurley
but honestly I've only been painting for 15 months, I'm not ready to exhibit anything.

Thank you to Melody and Terry for providing me with links of your works. I will definitely check them out!
@Bushcraftonfire - I genuinely hope that you do have your work exhibited in the future. Can I ask what you would expect from a gallery who were to exhibit your work?

Thanks again!

Ok I have one story.Last year I was(still) making copper/silver wire wrapped jewelry and I've found a gallery to exibit some of my pieces.Everytime I caleld and asked the owner about my pieces,if I get any feedbacks or if I sold anything she was telling em that she"didn't go downstairs and she doesn't asked the employees if there are feedbacks but none of them sold".Finally after about 6 months she called me to take them back...none sold.Again she didn't know of any feedbacks or anything and as far as I know the pieces were somewhere in the back.Anyway, my mistake was that 1st the gallery was mostly for classic type of jewelry and mine were no classic at all so hence no one was interested; 2ndly I should've taken them back the minute I heared her that she has no idea about anything and 3rdly I should've kept looking for other galleries and don't give up.So my lesson is that you should go to a gallery that can represent your style(if you paint classic flowers don't go to an abstract gallery 4 ex) and if you don't sell or get rejected then keep looking.

@ Asancta - Thank you for your feedback. Sorry to hear that your exhibit did not go according to plan! The fact that the owner did not communicate with you in any way is unbelievable! :vs_unimpressed: Did you have any input as to how your pieces were displayed, advertised, etc.? (If the owner done any of those things).

I do believe was very bad business on her side...again(apparently) she didn't even talk to the employees about what/how/where it sells and every time I called she kept telling me that she "doesn't knows" of any feedbacks(so might've been feedbacks from customers but she didn't know).I mean if someone wanted to negociate I would've go for it...
I think the pieces were exposed somewhere in the back of the store...although am not sure.Partly was my mistake-after one month I should've just take them back...At that time I was new to this country and couldn't drive there(was pretty far away from where I live) so that was another issue...Eh well...lessons to learn...

It was very bad business on her part. :surprise: It makes me question whether she is still in business if that is how she treats her clients! :vs_worry:

I wish you every success for the future and hope that you do not encounter any other gallery owner with the lack of ownership, lack of professionalism and lack of communication skills that you had to deal with!
