I am seeking stories, comments and advice from those who have had their work exhibited in galleries. I am looking to hear the good, the bad, the ugly and everything in between.

The reason I am requesting this information is because I am in the early stages of opening my own gallery and want to hear from those who have first-hand experience of dealing with galleries.

I would also appreciate any comments and advice from those who have not exhibited in a gallery, providing information on what they would like or expect from a gallery for research purposes.

Any advice would be appreciated and you never know; you may have an exhibition in my gallery!

Aw..:vs_sob: I've always wanted to include any art of mine for an exhibit...I've been going to museums and mini exhibit galleries..I'm still looking for a community or group that I can share mine...not even sure where to start looking actually..well if ever that day comes, I'll be so proud even though no one wants to buy it...sorry I can't give you any comments or suggestions about it..but I would like to hear from the other members here too..:laugh:

I never was exhibited but my mom has :laugh:
She had good and bad experience, the bad one one because of the lady that had the gallery she didn't do a proper job of publicizing the show and didn't take good care of the artists that were there, the lighting was bad which didn't flatter the paintings at all, and the good experiences well everything was nicely done, good publicity very nice lightning and painting placement :biggrin:
She even sold one of her paintings :laugh:

I am glad to hear that your mom had a positive experience of exhibiting her work as well as selling a piece of her work after her bad experience. :vs_shocked: I will definitely take what you have written on board and try not to make the same mistake! :laugh:

I have some stuff here on the forum... but it's mostly comic book stuff, I do paint but I'm very beginner so I'm not really comfortable with showing anything maybe when I'll get a little better :vs_blush:

Ok I have one story.Last year I was(still) making copper/silver wire wrapped jewelry and I've found a gallery to exibit some of my pieces.Everytime I caleld and asked the owner about my pieces,if I get any feedbacks or if I sold anything she was telling em that she"didn't go downstairs and she doesn't asked the employees if there are feedbacks but none of them sold".Finally after about 6 months she called me to take them back...none sold.Again she didn't know of any feedbacks or anything and as far as I know the pieces were somewhere in the back.Anyway, my mistake was that 1st the gallery was mostly for classic type of jewelry and mine were no classic at all so hence no one was interested; 2ndly I should've taken them back the minute I heared her that she has no idea about anything and 3rdly I should've kept looking for other galleries and don't give up.So my lesson is that you should go to a gallery that can represent your style(if you paint classic flowers don't go to an abstract gallery 4 ex) and if you don't sell or get rejected then keep looking.

It was very bad business on her part. :surprise: It makes me question whether she is still in business if that is how she treats her clients! :vs_worry:

I wish you every success for the future and hope that you do not encounter any other gallery owner with the lack of ownership, lack of professionalism and lack of communication skills that you had to deal with! :biggrin:
