I spent the weekend working on the second try at painting my granddaughter Jayna. For the second time the picture came out as a good picture but it didn't capture the essence of Jayna...It just doesn't look like her and for the life of me I can't put my finger on what it is that will make the difference. Please help if you have ideas.
I actually like the painting a lot and think you did a great job. There are things that don't match up but that doesn't take away from it as a painting, just things that could be worked on for the next one.
Ok..some of the differences I see are the eyes. In your painting they are not level or the same size. The left eye (as you are looking at it) is larger than the right and the inward point (sclera) is lower (it points down) than the sclera of the right. The right eye looks good. The problem area is the left eye. It also appears as though your distance between the eyes in your painting might be a bit wider than the photograph?
The chin is not as square as the photograph. Your painting has a more narrow chin but if you look in the photograph a little squaring it up might not hurt.
The teeth look good..just need to remember to look closely at them and add gaps where there are gaps. There is a pretty substantial gap surrounding that one tooth on the left side in the picture but your painting doesn't depict that gap.
I would add more contrast. Look closely at the right side of the face vs. the left. You have done quite a bit of contrast already but I do believe the area around her chin could be ramped up a bit. If you look at the area above her left eye you have your light area a little too far to the left when compared to the photograph.
Does she have freckles? Maybe give her a few? Eyebrow shape is not quite right either.
It's the little things that make a world of difference. It took a long time for me to figure out people (They are finicky to draw because proportions have to be SPOT on).I am still not as good as it as I should be.
Honestly as frustrating as it can be at times you are doing a great job.
