People like us who are artists can be at times very distracted and always have our heads wanting to go in 1,000 different directions. Then we complain why we don't get things done.

I'm curious to know if any of you take some time at the beginning of the year to write down your artistic goals and the things you want to accomplish. And I mean this in a tangible, measurable way, like this:

-Instead of saying "I want to do as many paintings as possible, you write down "I want to finish 5 paintings by December 31st".

For example as part of my big 8 goals for the year, I wrote "Release a music video in October" and "Release a 4-song EP by March 31st".

You are not the only weirdo, just the only one who writes them down. My goal is to finish a drawing every 2 months on average, 6 by December 31st.

I bet that being clear on your objectives/goals makes you more productive and procrastinate less. True?

I used to be the kind of artist who would start something and never finish it and then move on to the next thing. So after a few years of that I had a hard drive full of bits and pieces but no signs of a body of work. That all changed when I read Steven Pressfield's book The War of Art and Turning Pro (and all of his books actuall) last year and got really focused and intentional on finishing things.

We had a similar thread to this going last year and I wrote in it that my goal is to have a painting of mine displayed at our bank who displays paintings from local artists. It didn't happen in 2015 but I accomplished that goal January, 2016 and had my first art piece displayed prominently at the bank.

I think my goal for this year will be to sell my first painting for over $100. That would be the biggest ego boast to me ever!

Achieving goals makes us feel like there's nothing we can't achieve right? it gives us a burst of energy and a lot of motivation.

Loving our art-making and having fun at it is the most important thing an artist can do. Whether people like the outcome or not is out of our control, and frankly it is none of our business.
