Here is a Challenge for all of us, no matter what our skill level is: Draw or paint something new,A new style, a new subject, or even for the first time. Take a chance, a bold leap into the unknown, untrodden paths of new art. Share it here with this community of artists. All who came before and achieved greatness had to do this. I will start by posting a work of a subject of my greatest fear. My first snake, "Crotalus Atrox", the Western Diamondback. I really hate and fear these snakes. My skin crawled while painting it, but the commitment was to do more detail that I have ever rendered.

I think you did a great job on the snake Don, especially considering your fear of them. We have several species here and for some reason I am not the least bit afraid of them. Now a centipede I hate with every bone in my body and it's so bad I couldn't even fathom drawing it. They paralyze me. I hate them. Very nicely done.

I did just purchase a new set of oil pastels and will try something with them. It has been years and years since I have even touched an oil pastel. I need to get this commission work done first though.

LOL! Can I count the commission work? That girl has given me fits!

The girl and horse do count. That is the spirit of the challenge. I would not suggest to anyone to paint the object of worst fear. However, I believe it to be a turning point for me on several levels. Jump into the oil pastels, a very fruitful medium!

From what I remember of them I do love working with them. I am anxious to get this commission out of the way and try something different and fun. Although, she did say that if she liked it she wanted me to do another one so...we will see.

I do plan on purchasing a slew of new art supplies soon. A lot of mine are old and dying. I tend to stick with pencil so my other art supplies just sit there...time to get try something new. Everybody tells me that my pencil work should be my primary medium and it is what I feel most comfortable with but I reason that I need to keep up with the other mediums as well because not everybody likes graphite.
