: brag or excuse

Why do so many people here make statements along these lines: "I've had no formal training or art classes."?

Lol. GUILTY. I swear I have said this..ok...close to this. It's been a while though. I used to say it a lot and honestly it was an excuse because I had a lot of insecurities about my own abilities. I have since come to the realization and acceptance that its not really necessary to say it. It doesn't matter. If a person has the talent and drive they will grow and improve regardless of the formal art training. Some absolutely incredible artists have had no formal training at all. It shouldn't be used as an excuse or as a way to brag.

I look at it as nothing more than an explanation of past experiences. Not that big a deal to me. Neither an excuse or bragging....just a fact.

One of the first things people ask when they see my drawings is did you go to school for that. So generally in a forum atmosphere i figure it is easier to say i have had no formal training right off the bat.

Most are looking to let others know this fact for several reasons...
Justification if the reviews are negative towards the artist...
Justification of how great they are to other artists...
Either a bragging or an excuse of the quality of art that is presented...
Or just simply to let people know what there background is...

Even though people may say they have not any formal training or they are self taught, nobody is totally correct with that statement. We all learn from somewhere...learning from other artist to me is formal training, studying your favorite artists work would be formal training. Artists are artists regardless of their training or lack of it, it is what the artists create that is most important and the road of how they got there and where they are headed.
