: What to charge for designing tarot deck?

Hello! I'm new to the forum. Glad to have fellow artists to connect with :)

A woman saw my art on IG and asked me if I'd be interested in designing a 44 card oracle deck. I read tarot and oracle cards, so she definitely has my attention. She has already come up with the themes and messages for each card. I feel a very positive energy about the project *but* she is on the very low end in terms of budget. I would love to make it work but she offered $333. I was asked to do a similar project last year and was offered over 3k.

$333 for 44 cards just isn't feasible for me. It will take months to complete 44 cards, upload and edit them into pdf. Should I counter with my normal base price (knowing she likely can't match that amount)? Give her a deal because I feel really good about the project? Stick with $333 and do very simple designs? I'm new to designing for other people so any info is greatly appreciated!

Hi Artfulmagic,

I donít know the market but this seems very low. Less than $8 per card, taking how many hours per card from concept to done? You may as well pick up jobs from Upwork or someplace and earn way more. In fact, create your own pack and put it on Etsy or Ebay and sell many prints.

Of course, if youíre looking to build a portfolio of paid work, then maybe this is a time investment that youíre willing to put in. If you have nothing else on and thereís no pressing deadline well then you may as well practice your art, get a little stipend for it, have something to add to your portfolio and share on social media, etc.

Iím terribly fair-work-for-fair-pay oriented but sometimes the additional benefits as above can be worth something. Better than twiddling our creative thumbs!
