: I have started abstract painting in acrylic

I started painting very recently. I don't have any experience, so starting out was a lot about experimenting with the medium and how paint behaves.

I'd like a place to discuss my paintings and how to make them better. Below are my first 5 paintings.

Hopeful that they appear in order.

Welcome to the forum!

I am no judge of abstract but I do find these pleasing.

I think maybe they feel too messy. I start out with something in my mind, but by the end the paint seems to take on a life of its own, I also find that the broader and faster the strokes are generally the better it looks. Causing a sort of dizzying or maddening image in the end. I think I need to work on my accuracy with the pallet knife. But otherwise, I feel like I'm learning a lot with every one I make. How the paint behaves on the canvas and a few nice effects, as well as pitfalls.

I'm going to try four really small canvases, I want to try and do just simple shapes. Abstract polygons. So I'm going to play with a brush somewhat, and I wanted a soft background so I may try using a little bit of water.

Wish me luck!
