So, I'm very new to all of this. Only in my 2nd basic drawing class, and did learn and practice sketching.

I often come across beautiful scenes while motorcycling with friends. While it isn't very convenient to stop and sketch, I imagine I could impose upon the group to wait while I capture the general area with my cell phone.

Do experienced artists frequently use cell phone / tablet cameras while out on the road to capture the overall scene, and then sketch from them later on?

I find that although my cellphone is a great tool it is not a replacement for a sketchbook. Your camera catches images while your sketchbook captures feelings and a much more personal viewpoint. Its like looking at the grand canyon and then looking at a picture of the grand canyon. Seeing something in 3d will always be better than 2d. That being said cellphones are awesome for figuring out composition and lighting. Use all the tools you have!
