Stay out of debt. Drive an older, paid-for car. Live modestly.

If you end up with lots of payments, your chances of living off of your artistic skills drop to zero.

It's feasible that you may land a six-figure job as an artist. It's much more likely that you'll get paid like a McDonald's worker outside the state of California.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't chase your dream of making a living as an artist. Just expect to live very modestly if you do. Doing what you love for a living means you're not working for a living. That's Nirvana.
