I posted a recent work in the oil painting forum yesterday and then realized I hadn't introduced my self so here goes...

I enjoyed art in high school but didn't take it any further when I graduated in 1978. I've spent basically all my life working at sea on a variety of different vessels and still work in the offshore oil and gas industry.

After leaving school I more or less forgot about art as life, family and emigrating to Canada all came first.

That changed overnight when at 48 I suffered a major heart attack and while in recovery was told to find something to do to de-stress and slow things down. My wife suggested I have a go at painting, or at least just pick up a pencil again. That was in 2009 and I took my time just doing some sketches and then coloured pencil drawings before doing some watercolours. One Christmas I was given a set of oils and a couple of canvases so I began following along with Bob Ross and thoroughly chilled out placing happy trees and fluffy clouds wherever I wanted.

Things have slowed down in the offshore industry as I'm sure you all know, but the good thing for me is that the last 6 months or so have given me enough time to try something a bit more detailed than simple 30 minute landscapes.

Yesterday I posted a photo of an oil painting of a couple of gondolas and it was well received so I will add a few more to the same forum.

Thanks for reading my waffle, nice to be here.

Steve

Welcome, Steve. I graduated HS in 1977, and didn't start hammering art hard until 2014. Considering how difficult instruction was to come by in the 70's and 80's, I'm in open-mouthed awe of what you can find on Youtube now. :-)

Thanks, you just got me thinking. I remember watching a series on TV in the 70's by a lady called Nancy Kominsky and being inspired by her. Just looked up the name to check the spelling and sure enough... "Paint Along with Nancy", right there on YouTube.

Alphonso Dunn is my Youtube guru. I've always been an ink guy, so is he, but he pushed himself to learn watercolors, so as to produce mixed media pieces. I've followed right along, and lately mixed watercolor and ink has been my favorite playthings.

There really is no limit to what you can learn from the Internet these days.

Hi and welcome. Even though I don't paint in oil I love watching Gary Jenkins tutorials on PBS, he's also on youtube. I'm off now to find the painting you posted.
