: First Gallery Gig!

I live in Bentonville, Arkansas, fast becoming a hub for art in the mid south. We have the Crystal Bridges museum, loaded with American art purchased with Wal Mart money. Many other smaller galleries have opened (and many have closed). One in town has been in business for a few years, though, and is stable and profitable.

The owner looked at my work in the local art walk last year and invited me to stop by and show a portfolio. I created one and stopped in on Monday.

She looked the portfolio over and started telling me that she's had to send a few exhibitors home because she's added a wine bar that has taken up 1/3 of the building. I figured that meant I was about to get told "sorry," and began mentally preparing questions like "how could I have done better?"

As she handed it back to me, I said "I have a couple of pieces in the car that I haven't had a chance to get in the portfolio, can I show them to you?"

So I brought in two pieces, one a watercolor of a ballerina, the other a mixed-media piece I did of the Beatles. When she saw the Beatles pic, her mouth dropped open and she said "I LIKE this!"

The next thing I know, she had picked out two other pieces for my first-ever gallery gig!

I think that the portfolio alone wouldn't have landed me the job. So from now on, for any gallery auditions, I'm keeping an original or two in the car.
