Has anybody here ever sold anything on Etsy or Ebay? I've sold to online friends on FB but never one of these selling sites and as of yesterday I'm giving it a shot. But I get the impression the chance of selling is kind of like winning the lottery because of the volume of paintings being offered on these sites.

So I've found... Not worth the time. Butthen I've not found ANY online sales to be of any value. People see it & buy or don't but they wanna walk away with it.

I put also my paintings on the site Etsy but I didn't sell anything.

You expect to sell after one day on Etsy?Doubt that even well known artists would sell after a couple of days on Etsy or any other online site.

No Victoria I don't expect to sell in one day...in fact I honestly don't expect to sell these at all for the prices I posted, and I'm thinking that I will not renew the postings when they expire because I love these paintings and will not part with them for less. I was just curious about how good of a venue Etsy is. So far I haven't found one artist that sold anything on it. That's covering two artist forums, this one and Wet Canvas.

Well I used to have an account but for jewelry.I used to make wire wrapped pendants, brooches and stuff. However I've been there for a couple of months and I sold ZERO items.But...I am not good on selling online,I have experience on face to face sells not online so I am not sure if you should take my experience as an example.

Don't feel sorry @TerryCurley (https://www.artistforum.com/member.php?u=15058) I for example am just starting to understand how and what you should do in order to get more views and more "fans".I've heared artists that are much older than I am and still can't sell anything online.Problem is that if you sell in your community(not online that is) you might have a couple of other artists as competition and you know what to expect but online is different. No matter how good you are there will be 10000 of other artists from allover that are better than you and sell cheaper than you and am not talking about Etsy...am talking internet in general and not only english based sites.Last year I've found a site for Chinese artists and they were so amazingly talented but sold veeery cheap.Internet is hard.

I belong to a forum on DailyStrength and have made some really good friends there. We actually have a retreat once a year and get together. It has been in different parts of the country each time. Anyway the marjority of them are also on facebook and they are the ladies that I have sold the most to, the group is about 300 strong but only about 30 of us that are really active participants and attend the retreats and are really a close knit group. I just shipped off the Sunset painting yesterday and I'm waiting for the Daisy one to dry so I can ship that. Both are going to friends from this group, and last week I shipped off the Winter Storm with the Barn.

Well I dunno...but I am talking of selling online as a living or a serious business...

Today a friend I use to work with bought one of my paintings on Etsy. Does it count if you know the person? Any way, I learned a few things. The money is in my Etsy account but will not be available to transfer to my bank account for 3 business days. I found out that PayPal works the same way. No big deal, I just didn't know...I never read all those terms and conditions.

I have only big paintings on Etsy and it turns out it cost me $17.80 to mail it.:surprise: I list as free shipping.

Given this plus the fact that I really don't want to part with the two that are currently on Etsy I upped the price to a ridiculous amount. I added $100 to one and $200 to the other. It was an experiment and now it's a bigger experiment.

Hey Terry, congrats on your first sale at Etsy! Who cares if it's someone you know, a sale is a sale.

I don't think I'm going to use Etsy ever again. I made the sale on 12/16/15. The customer paid instantly. I shipped the painting the same day and marked it so on the Etsy account. Yet my payment will not be available until 12/21/15. That is where Etsy is making extra money. Holding funds and playing games with it (not literally). For it to take 5 days after getting the money is ridiculous.

Waiting 5 days to get your money is not that bad.

Say What? The buyer paid on 12/16 by credit card. I would not mind if the buyer waited a bit, but there is no reason other than greed for the Company Etsy to hold onto my money. Now PayPal says it could take as long as 3 days and I'm OK with that because it is covering their liability if there is some delay in processing. In reality PayPal has been getting it into my bank the very next day.

On POD sites you need to wait over a month to get your money, and that's only if it reaches the designated threshold for a payout. I realize it's not exactly the same thing since the artist doesn't actually ship any artwork to the customer, but still the POD makes its profit right away while the artist needs to wait.

My brother-in-laws girlfriend did some art work for General Motors, it took her 18 months to get paid. Are you going to miss a mortgage payment because of it Terry? I wouldn't worry about it as long as they don't stiff you.

Hmmm even if you sell in a gallery you will have to wait more than that to get paid.I get paid after 30 days for ex.They(my gallery) want to make sure everything is ok and the customer is happy and the check is valid or whatever...stuff like that.5 days is nothing believe me...I don't think anyone will pay you straight away after you sold something...what if the customer receives a broken item?or is not happy with what he/she bought?(happened to me several times lol) or what IF the check he paid the site or gallery has no covereage?or the credit card is stolen?(happened to several friends of mine)
