: To frame or not to frame...that is my question

Sorry, couldn't resist it.
But I do have a serious question. Should a painting be offered for sale (in a gallery or elsewhere) with or without a frame. I've heard several opinions:

1. Unframed. People like to choose their own frame and the one the artist has chosen may put off a potential buyer.

2. Framed: People like to see the painting in a 'ready to hang' form and the thought of choosing a frame then having the canvas fitted to it may put off a potential buyer.

3. Framed, but only in a semi-permanent way. With a label stating that the painting may be purchased either framed or unframed. Naturally the options would be priced accordingly.

Sounds to me like #3 is the best option. Personally I will not purchase frames for my pictures and like to hang them unframed in my house.

Terry, can you even see your walls? :-)

LOL  Right now I only have seven of my paintings on my walls. I have given away a real lot of them, probably around 30. What I use to do is put them online and tell my online friends that it was free, just need to pay the mailing fees. Every family member has at least one of my paintings. I threw away a few, I have 35 for sale at the Flea Market, and l have sold at least 25 since I started 18 months ago mostly to online friends. I do want to make more for myself though. I am so enjoying my retirement and I'm so grateful I'm able to do this financially.

Sounds great. I still have another 4 years before retirement. I'm so looking forward to it.

Hmmm I'm choosing 3 too. So it's more like a buyer decission

Diversify... Try 'em all to appeal to the varying customers. I have some framed well, some cheap, some in plastic, some on fomecore, some for desk top use.

Looking around my lounge all 5 paintings ( not mine) are in a neutral dark wood frames.
