Question for all local artists......my husband and I are planning on opening a local merchant store where any local artist, craftsman, etc. can place their works on display. We cannot seem to agree on a price to rent the spaces out for. Each artist will pay a monthly fee to have a space and it is basically a 5 tier large shelf. There is a similar type store nearby and they charge $175 a month which just seems way to high. As artists yourself how much would you pay to have your art work displayed (how cheap would it have to be for you to take the gamble and hope it pays off)? Additionally what would you consider to be a fair percentage off sales? (once again the local place nearby charges the rental space fee plus 30%)?

We don't have stores like that devoted entirely to artists, but we do have stores like that and call them flea markets and they have all different kinds of stuff in them. I have a display in one of them and it is working out very well. All I do is pay the rent for the space and the owner does not get any commission on my work. The rent would be very dependent on the area you are in and the traffic you can count on having. The rental price should also take into consideration the size of the display, the prominence of the area being rented (ie front vs back) and the lighting of the business and the overall appearance of the building. Where I live, which is rural Arkansas rentals range from $35 to $110.
