oil paint on plaster

if I apply oil paint to a plaster sculpture, should it be
painted on directly with oil paint/turp, or should there
first be a ground layer, like gesso?
Any other advice welcome.

If the plaster was completely dry I don't see any reason you couldn't put the paint directly on. If you were using canned enamel paint it would be thin enough the plaster would absorb so much of it that it would probably be necessary for two coats. Artist oil is thick enough I don't see it being a problem.
