I vary, too. I've noticed that sometimes I assign a song to a painting. For example, I painted my elephant (Savannah's Reflection) listening only to Bouncing Off Clouds by Tori Amos on repeat; it's not my favorite song by her, and it's not even a very good song, but for whatever reason it's what I chose. Sometimes a line from a song triggers a thought for a painting or sculpture.
I did an ink drawing of Bjork once, because she was what I was listening to, and I needed practice.
I notice that "upbeat" songs make me paint faster, but that I also have a greater tendency to get up and pace when I listen to them. Right now I'm listening to Shakira and I'm soooooo focussed on my painting, let me tell you. :P
I tend to listen to instrumentals (usually something by Nine Inch Nails) when I'm doing referenced commissions, but when I'm doing a still-life where I'm trying to learn and be attentive, I find silence to be the best option.
