Art Startup Idea

Hi all,

I'm a student developing a startup idea for an entrepreneurship class. Our team is looking to create a system that ensures that artwork bought and sold is legitimate or properly priced using blockchain logic. We were wondering if any of you have faced any problems with purchasing fake art pieces or overpriced art in the past, and whether or not developing a system like this would be a good idea.

Thanks for your feedback.

What is blockchain logic?

What is fake art? Are you buying art from deceased artists and what constitutes overpriced? Is the quality and time spent on the work not worth the asking price or is the art simply out of your budget?
jacqueline likes this.

I think you're on the wrong forum. We create and discuss the creation of art here.

Wowza! I love it, but then, I'm a sucker for a snow scene.

So, I was trying to log into my email account and there were some errors with the certificate, which prompted me to investigate the web console link regarding the issue[with Symantec] and learned that Google does not/or will not trust (eventually) their issued certificates. I contacted my domain provider regarding the issue and decided to visit their blog while I was at it, in the process of scrolling I came upon the concept of BLOCKCHAIN in one of their articles (http://www.name.com/blog/news-2/2017...th-blockchain/). It reminded me of this post specifically, so I decided to Google about it just now since I had wrote it off as some techno-jargon when I first read this post.

I came across these articles (which I haven't read yet but the articles caught my attention and I plan on reading them once I finish typing this):

https://www.forbes.com/sites/rogerai.../#73717a5474fe

https://fee.org/articles/how-blockch...the-art-world/

https://hbr.org/2017/03/blockchain-c...creative-works

After viewing an info graphic (yes, I need a visual explanation sometimes, especially with technology [pic inserted]) it occurred to me that perhaps this can be applied not only in the financial aspect of selling art, but in the verification and production of art.

I am interested in security of art. I like means of verification like, signatures (either by use of symbols, logos or monograms), certificates of authenticity, hologram stickers and establishing a system of numbering, fingerprinting art and things like that. I know it may sound corny, but it is something I am into.

So I am wondering, is it possible to incorporate the concept of blockchain when it comes to verifying a work of art with the artists, outside of the realm of finance and business for artists just concerned that their work is not stolen or ripped off from the internet by others?

If you look into the matter, this seems to be affecting the art world, and for a while now. I just came across this all myself today.

Just look at the dates of each published article in the links provided.

POST SCRIPT***

What I meant to say was, can blockchain be used in a non-digital manner?

POST SCRIPT No. 2***

Now that I have gotten to the articles mentioned, it seems this one is addressing (the OP's) [and] my initial inquiry

https://fee.org/articles/how-blockch...the-art-world/

from the article

Quote:
Certifying Authenticity and Tracking Ownership

This is where Blockchain is particularly fit to solve these issues. As a distributed ledger, it can be used to provide an immutable and censorship-resistant database of ownership.

Indeed, many organizations are looking to leverage this technology in issuing certificates of authenticity.

One of these organizations is Verisart, which is building a worldwide permanent and decentralized ledger of art and collectibles. Its mobile application can be used by artists to generate a certificate of authenticity, and by collectors to verify provenance in real-time. We previously detailed its ambitions here.
