Vasiliki Quinlan Salvador Dali said to not try and find perfection in your work as you can never reach it. Even the great Dali believed this. I learned in art school never to throw any of my work out as it is a language of your production, just be free of expectation on self and your art will speak to you.

TheRulesHaveChanged Keep a sketchbook and take an "anything goes" approach. Draw anything - Make it ugly - fill it with bad drawings/sketches/paintings. Try and make them good but be satisfied when they're bad. Don't buy an expensive sketchbook at first. Just get one for $5 somewhere and fill it.

Remember anything goes. Experiment with images in different ways that you wouldn't imagine doing on a larger canvas. Use tools you've never used before. Make weird things that you've never seen.

Every now and then you'll find an idea that has some unique beauty to it. Explore those ideas. Make thumbnails on how to best show what you think is beautiful. Once you've found a thumbnail that works best for you, bring it out of the sketchbook onto a canvas and paint it.

I find that this process builds momentum and confidence in your own hand.

Getting over nerves

Ok so before I start a piece I get nervous because of fear of it going totally wrong, especially when trying out something new...

Any advice on how to lessen the nerves? Its not even as if I'm painting for money, its just a hobby... But a hobby I sometimes take very seriously lol.
