Prepping canvas for charcoal (need some tooth)

Good morning! I'm taking on a large format charcoal portrait project and canvas was calling my name for some reason or another. I've been looking around for some information on preparing the canvas surface for charcoal application and just can't seem to find a direct answer. Some have suggested layering and gently sanding Gesso, other articles I've read claim a pastel primer will give the canvas some tooth to improve adhesion and smooth out the surface of the canvas.

Any suggestions or feedback would be very much appreciated ❤️
