temporary void product

I'm doing a piece on canvas and want to create a void. I was hoping to use a liquid product that could be pulled off. I know I did something like this back in art school, but can't for the life of me think of what the product was. Anyone have suggestions?

I know there is that liquid protector for acrylic but I use oil and what I do use masking tape. It works great for me.
