Hi, I have some wooden hand made Christmas ornaments from Germany that are at least 30 yrs old. The paint on some of them is starting to peel or flake off and I wanted to repair at least the ones that have most damage. Can you tell me what kind of paint is used for something like this? Oil or acrylic? And is varnish used? Thanks!
Oil paint is difficult to work with if you don’t have experience with it. It also takes a long time to dry. My advice, take it slow, go with acrylic. It dries much faster and can also be easily removed if desired. Get a good set of brushes. No dollar store stuff. And have a cup of water to keep the paint brush if taking a break from painting, for longer breaks. Ziplock bag and freezer. When finished, I would suggest a good spray can varnish so there’s no chance of ruining your hard work. Light swaths of spray once across quick. Once across quick and then go the opposite way one more time for each. Don’t let anything touch it till it’s all dry (15-20min atleast).
