A Guide on How to NOT Stand Out as an American in Florenc

Having lived as an American student in Florence for two years of my life, I got pretty good at spotting the obvious “do’s & don’t’s” when it comes to blending in with the locals. We’re all familiar with the common traveler’s cliché: When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Well, the same can be said for Florence. Trust me when I say that Italians have a lot of rules that they live by, especially when it comes to food and fashion.
-Be aware of the volume of your voice, the city center is not a theme park.
-Do not wear gym clothes if you are not in the gym!
-Don’t order a cappuccino after midday.Cappuccino is considered a morning drink (all that milk!), and should therefore never be consumed any time after noon.
-The more toppings that you order on a pizza, the more obvious it is that you are American.
-No baseball caps. And don’t wear flip-flops unless you’re at the seaside.

    Florence
Spend your summer living in an actual palace? Just like a fairy tale, but in reality? Our residence in Florence, a historical Renaissance era palazzo, was owned by a member of the Medici family, Cosimo il Vecchio, and Marquis Orazio Pucci. It used to host works of Renaissance art, served as a theater, a convent, a sanctuary for pilgrims, and now it is the summer home of Abbey Road students and faculty!

Win a one week stay at the palazzo, all expenses included, by entering a contest on Florence, its history, art and culture. For more information, write to us at [email protected] and use "Florence Contest - Your Name" in the subject heading.

    "Lady in Red"

Cinema workshop, Abbey Road Programs, summer 2013.

Berlin, Prague, Aix in Provence, St. Laurent du Var, Nice, Barcelona, Rome, Paris.
Last summer Abbey Road students had an opportunity to work on a short film project directed and produced by two artists from Poland and France, Justyna Ptak and Maxime Martins, who are also Abbey Road staff members and instructors.

It is a story about a fortuitous encounter between a young man and a young woman, a pursuit of a dream. It starts with his discovering a picture of a young lady. The next day she passes him by on the beach. From that moment on, he follows her. He travels through time and space, but she disappears when he gets close. He sees her in Berlin on Alexander Platz, in Prague on Charles Bridge, and almost finds her in a small French town, but she disappears again...
