What do I do?

I’m a young amateur artist, I thought this quarantine would be a great time to do some art . Unfortunately I feel very unmotivated, I can’t seem to make anything other than scribbles, let alone anything I’m proud of. Any idea that I get is far abound my skill level and I feel awful when I can’t complete it. I’ve asked friends for prompts but I’m uninspired. What can I do to get out of this slump? Should I take a break, work harder or what? I’ve been through this before, but it’s usually shorter and not as severe. This has been going on for weeks now and I’m about ready to throw my desk out the window! Please, what can I do?

Hey, Zizor.

I'm going through something similar so I understand how you feel. I think we all as artists go through periods where we can't come up with anything. One thing I was told that you could try is taking a break from some of the more complex stuff and focus on drawing exercises. These can help you hone your drawing while allowing your brain to recharge. If you're looking for some form of inspiration though, try looking to something that excites you like movies or tv shows. They might bring you some ideas. Hope this helps.

Dear Zizor

From personal experience, when times are challenging, even on a global scale and not necessarily on a personal level, it can be hard to create.
I myself thought I would be very creative in this time of "staying at home" but it has not been so. Instead, I've spent a lot more time in nature, in my garden, communing with those things that bring me much joy and inspiration, especially in my art, like birds, flowers, trees and the sun and moon.
What brings you inspiration, and ignites your creative passion?
Like Troodon39 wisely says "try looking to something that excites you like movies or tv shows. They might bring you some ideas."
So true! Art should be a fun, playful and intuitive experience. Enjoy the process, even if it is making a simple drawing of something that moves you, like a flower, or a teacup, or a bird at rest.

Stay well, and enjoy your creativity!

I think we've all been there! when I hit a slump I stop completely for a few days sometimes being away from it gives my brain time to clear and refresh and usually a good idea will come to me. Don't stress yourself out over it!

Slump

When I get in a slump with painting, I'll take a break and do something else. I'll go fly fishing, surf fishing, day drives. If I see or think something while doing these things, the slump ends right away. I paint plein air mostly. Just try taking a walk near a water front, parks, it sometimes helps.

I can only try to paint, what god created.
