releases and permissions

Hi everyone, recently an issue was raised that I would like to have your input on. If a customer gives you a photograph of her child to paint their portrait, should you ask their permission to add the finished painting to your online portfolio? If yes, then does that apply to all commissioned work ie landscapes, still lifes, pet portraits whatever? I look forward to hearing your views. Thank you

I'm not a lawyer but it seems to me that you own the rights to your work no matter. Just my opinion and I hope someone in the know jumps in here.

Wowza! I love it, but then, I'm a sucker for a snow scene.

You do own the rights to your work but to avoid any issue, mention it in writing.
