Looking for an illustrator

Hi Guys,

First of, if i'm in the wrong place i apologize, I do appreciate moderator help if that is the case.

As the title states I am looking for an illustrator for a novel I am writing. I am currently in the first draft so the final product is still a long way of so at the moment I am really just looking around out of curiosity.

I was wondering if anybody here is interested in potentially doing a few illustrations later on. Notably the book cover (I've uploaded a super basic example that I made with Canva in about 5 minutes...) and 4 full page illustrations to be placed at the start of each of the 3 acts and at the end of the third. So 5 drawings in total. I am also curious how you guys sell/license your work and an example offer would also be really appreciated.

As there is no finished product yet on my end, I'm not currently looking for any procurement but should anyone wish to send me something I would really appreciate that. Of course I will not commercially use anything without the proper agreement. I also wouldn't like it if someone took my work, so, if i get sent anything at this stage it will remain purely private.

So, in case anybody wishes to send me something for me to see your individual style, what I am looking for is a drawing or render of a flying steamship (yes, a flying steamship )

I'm writing a fantasy/steampunk crossover novel and flying ships are a big thing in the story. I am really curious what you guys can/are willing to do with that. The only requirement I have is that the ship has no balloon like you see in the usual steampunk ship, but also doesn't look like someone just took a regular ship and put it in the air. I also like a big plume of sooty black smoke billowing from the chimney to show the sort of dirty part of industrialism.

BTW, coming back to the attached example cover, I'm not asking for any of that now but just as a general idea I selected a basic stock photo of a cloudy sky with the idea that on the final product there should be a skyship (as i call them) seen steaming off in the distance, perhaps going in or coming out of a cloud.

Big thanks to you all and I'm looking forward to any reactions.

Kind regards,
H.J.C. VELD

OK! Got those initial five drawings done.

1. Airship
This one is like you said- no blimp, and it doesn't look like a ship, aside from the sails and front. Probably made out of metal, with a camel shape on the back, and some sort of curlicue on the back- I see this as purely for decoration, whereas the propeller is for stabilization. Two windows and some nets or something on the bottom, and then three pegs for landing. The smokestack takes center stage here, and it has lots of smoke. Clearly, the sails are only for steering, and this ship's heft is carried mostly by the coal engine.

2. Cover
This cover is heavily stylized and feature an airship that's different from the first one, with three legs and no nets. I assume these work like cars in this world, so modification is a thing. Your name is on the bottom in the middle, and mine below it. All I ask for this is credit, and perhaps a digital copy of the book when you're through with it.

3. Street
This is a street of this universe. It's viewed from above, as if an airship was perhaps narrowly zooming through this semi-alley, and a skewed sense of perspective gives the reader a sense of vertigo and an impression of high speed action. The cobblestone street is empty- typical for a world where travel is conducted via sky- and has pedestrians and lamplights, as well as all the typical Steampunk industries. In the background is an ethereal city as well as one lone airship. This may be the suburbs.

4. Smokestacks
The Street drawing is paralleled by this grim drawing of smokestacks at night. Each one has a different type of smoke, giving the impression of five factories or five different modes of production, and all five are in front of a large brick wall, and then behind the wall is the same ethereal city from before.

5. Steampunk Guy
We finish off with this dapper fellow, dressed to the nines in monocle and coat. In one hand is a cane, in the other is a high-powered laser gun, giving the impression that he's well cultured but also badass. In the background is his residence- with a bookshelf, a large steampunk computer, and a cup o' tea. I'd suggest using this drawing for the protagonist.

Those are the five, and as I said, these are free, so take them and do what you will with them, and mail me again about how they appear in print. Also mail me for smaller illustrations, or anything else.
