I don't do that kind of painting however with any painting you look at the different colors and the shapes of the color in the flower and try to reproduce that. Don't look at the flower as a whole but each pedal individually. Sort of like painting by numbers without the numbers. Make a pencil sketch first and then fill it in. I sometimes either take a photograph or a sketch and make it full size of the painting and transfer it to the canvas with carbon paper. Photographs, I run them through photoshop and make them 16"x20" which is the size canvas I use and crop it into 4 different images and print them with my computer printer and then past them back together so they are the right size.

Thank you for your post. Your response will help me train my brain to do certain things when drawing or painting. That is not a practice I have learned. I am work in progress and sometimes it’s the simplest idea that can make a difference. As for photoshop I don’t have and it seems too much to learn right now for me. But I do use paint to enlarge and print some of them. What I find crazy is I wanted to paint big flowers when I first started, but realized because it was so hard. I started to do smaller flowers and they looked so much better. Thank you again.

I'm a beginner myself so I can only help a little. I'm more drawn to portrait painting. I still have difficulty getting the paint colors right. I painted a picture yesterday of my daughter and it looked perfect right up close to it but to view the picture from 15' away she looks like an albino. I didn't get the shading dark enough. She is pale anyway but nothing like the painting I did.
